Correction of protruding ears
Who doesn’t know names like “Dumbo” or “elephant ears”? Children and adults frequently suffer from what is actually a harmless malpositioning of the ears. Protruding ears frequently lead to insecurity and can be corrected by an operative intervention.
OP procedure:
This treatment can generally be conducted under local anesthesia. However, general anesthesia as well as a one-night inpatient stay at the clinic are recommended, especially for children. With protruding ears, the antihelix of the auricle is usually either weakly developed or missing entirely. In addition, the angle at which the auricle projects from the back of the head is usually too great. For these reasons, it necessary to refold the ear cartilage in the antihelix region and rotate the auricle toward the back. The ear cartilage must be fixed in this new shape with a stitch.
Occasionally, the malformation at hand is a combined one which involves other parts of the ear. The cartilage of the auricle is exposed by an incision on the back side of the ear and thinned out using a fine diamond grinding head or scalpel until the cartilage can be folded into the desired form. It is then fixed with 3-4 fine U-stitches. Once the rear side has been prepared, the entire auricle is then pivoted until it comes close to the back of the head, where it is also affixed with U-stitches. The skin is then closed with a continuous suture.
If you prefer general anesthesia for yourself or your child, the proper preliminary examinations will have to be conducted. The anesthesiologist will explain all the necessary details to you in a preliminary consultation. If the operation is performed under local anesthesia, you can arrive at the practice on the day of the operation and will be able to return home after a brief follow-up observation. General anesthesia can be performed at the outpatient operation centre in Bamberg or at the Steigerwald Clinic in Burgebrach.
