The optimum long-term method:
Laser hair removal
The removal of unwanted body hair is a widespread desire and applies equally to the fairer sex as well as the coarser one. The techniques are diverse, but shaving or removal with wax and creams fail to prevent the hair from growing back. Stubble and scratching are an everyday burden and can be a real nuisance. In recent years, doctors’ and cosmeticians’ offers for long-term hair removal have added up. In principle, there are two methods which appear suitable in influencing hair roots so as to prevent hair growth from recurring:
- Intense pulsed light (IPL)
- The diode laser or Alexandrite system
Both methods have the common principle of briefly subjecting the hair root to a brief, intense heat through the use of a powerful, very short pulse of light in a single color, which interacts with the pigment of the hair root. In the cell division phase, when the hair is in the growth phase, the hair root’s stem cells are especially sensitive and can be destroyed by this method. The hair then falls out after a short time and cannot form again. The skin smoothens itself out and the hair has disappeared.
Multiple treatments are necessary, though, since not all hair roots go through this sensitive phase at the same time. But normally, nearly all dark-colored hairs should be eliminated after 7-9 treatments.
Each method has its pros and cons: The way the intense pulsed light method works is less directed. It distributes highly energetic light in an untargeted manner and can easily lead to side effects such as burning the skin or changes in pigment. But it works more quickly, since the exit port on the device’s treatment handpiece is usually larger.
The laser works somewhat more slowly, but has the advantage that the energy is applied in a much more targeted fashion, meaning that less energy is needed overall. This makes side-effects less common and less severe – the laser works more gently. Unfortunately, German legislation prohibits it from being operated by non-physicians, which is why cosmetics studios, hair removal institutes, etc., are not able to offer gentle laser treatment.
We use an American system from the company Lumenis at our practice. Our LightSheer laser is a diode laser of the latest generation. Our employees have received special training in its use and have now been working with it regularly for 4 years.
