Breast reconstruction

The reconstruction of the female breast is usually performed as an early reconstruction directly after a tumor operation or later, usually after chemotherapy or radiation therapy has been carried out.

We distinguish between breast reconstruction with foreign material, generally as an implant, and reconstruction with one's own tissue.  In the process, the body’s own tissue is relocated in a suitable manner in order to form a female breast. This can be carried out by means of a flap graft with its own blood supply – that is, with what is known as a pedicled flap, or by means of free flaps which are microsurgically connected to other blood vessels. Examples of this include the latissimus dorsi flap, as a typical vascular pedicled flap, and the truly innovative DIEP flap, which is connected to the internal mammary artery.  Both procedures have specific advantages as well as disadvantages which must be taken into consideration. This makes it possible to develop an individual treatment concept which will best meet the patient’s needs.

The health insurance will usually assume the costs without problems; we operate in inpatient treatment at our cooperative clinic and use general anesthesia.

Depending on the procedure chosen, an inpatient stay of 3-7 days usually follows.
